Same Biology, Different Conversation

As caregivers for young women, it is up to us to let them know that having a vagina—and getting their period—is nothing to be ashamed of. We need to explain to them that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and that using douches, feminine hygiene deodorants, feminine wipes, and other scented products can change the balance of vaginal flora and trigger vaginitis, UTIs, and yeast infections. Diaper bags are a must-have item when it comes to parenthood. They’re essential for packing up all of your baby’s things in an easily accessible place when you venture out. Typical diaper bag items include diapers, baby wipes, pacifiers, change of clothing, etc.

How often should I clean the diaper bag?

Wiping down your diaper bag once a week is a good habit. Any spills or messes in between your weekly wipe-downs should be handled immediately so it doesn’t leave any stains. 

Avoid throwing it into a washing machine unless the label clearly states it’s washing-machine safe. Doing so could cause damage to your diaper bag.

How to clean diaper bags

Step 1: Check the label for manufacturer care instructions

The first thing you should do prior to cleaning is to check the label on the diaper bag to see if there are care instructions. The cleaning process can range from spot cleaning to tossing it into the washing machine depending on the material and style. Generally speaking, wiping down and spot cleaning should be safe to do on any type of material. 

Step 2: Empty it completely

Take everything out of your diaper bag. Make sure to empty all pockets and compartments. Leave all zippers and clasps open.

Step 3: Shake it out

Turn it upside down over a large garbage can and shake it so any loose crumbs and dirt will fall out. You can do this outside if you prefer.

Step 4: Vacuum it

Use a slim vacuum attachment to remove any remaining dirt, dust, and debris inside the bag.

Step 5: Clean it with soapy water

Fill a bucket or large mixing bowl with warm water and mild laundry detergent. Wet a clean cloth, then wring it out so it’s damp. Then use the damp cloth to wipe the diaper bag thoroughly inside and outside. Make sure to wipe inside the pockets and compartments, as well as all straps and handles.

Step 6: Clean it with clear water

Repeat the process with a clean cloth that is wet with only water (no detergent).

Step 7: Let it air dry

Hang the diaper bag somewhere to air dry completely before using it again. Leave the pockets and compartments open so it dries faster.

What is diaper rash?

Diaper rash is a skin condition that is common among babies, but can affect anyone who regularly wears a diaper. It’s characterized by red inflamed skin on the bottom and areas covered by the diaper. It’s typically caused when the skin is exposed to urine or poop for too long.

Diaper rash is irritating and uncomfortable for babies. Most cases are mild and can be cleared up at home without needing to see a doctor. Typical at-home treatments include more frequent diaper changes, air drying before putting on new diapers, and OTC diaper rash ointments or creams. Babies with sensitive skin may be more prone to diaper rashes.

What are the causes of diaper rash?

Diaper rash is most often caused by the following:

• Infrequent diaper changes: if your baby’s skin is exposed to urine or poop for long periods, it may lead to diaper rash. The time varies by child and how sensitive their skin is.

• Improperly fitted diapers: If the diaper is too tight, the edges can rub against your baby’s skin and cause diaper rash, chafing, and skin irritation.

• Allergic reactions: Your baby may develop a diaper rash if they’re allergic to an ingredient in the diaper, baby wipes, laundry detergent, lotion, or any products that come in contact with their skin. A diaper rash could also be the result of an allergic reaction to food. If you’re exclusively breastfeeding, it could be due to something you ate. 

• Introducing solids: When you introduce solid foods to your baby, their poop will change in content and frequency. This could lead to a diaper rash.

• Medication: If you take a prescription medication while breastfeeding, it could impact your breastmilk, which could impact your baby’s stool. This is especially true for antibiotics. If your infant has to take antibiotics, this could also impact the bacteria in their poop, which may lead to a diaper rash.
  
  

What are the symptoms of diaper rash?

It’s important to know the symptoms of diaper rash so you can recognize them and treat them accordingly. 

Here are the most common signs of diaper rash:

• Red skin around the diaper area, on the bottom, or in the folds of the upper thighs

• Red bumps in the diaper area

• Peeling or flaking skin

• Scaly and rough patches of skin

What are the different types of diaper rash?

Irritant dermatitis

This type of diaper rash is the most common and is caused by irritants — namely urine and poop — and rubbing and chafing from moving around in diapers. It impacts the genitals, bottom, thighs, and stomach.

Candida dermatitis

Candida dermatitis is caused by yeast. It’s usually a deep red color and shows up in patches all over the diaper area, in the creases of the thighs, and sometimes even spreads outside of the diaper area. If you think yeast is the cause, check your baby’s mouth for thrush, a yeast infection that occurs in the mouth. 

Yeast-related diaper rashes are typically linked to taking antibiotics, either by the baby or by the breastfeeding mother. 

Allergic dermatitis

Allergic dermatitis is related to an allergic reaction to the diaper or baby wipes. It could be the material or an ingredient. It could also be caused by the laundry detergent you use for their clothes or the lotion or cream you use during diaper changes. If you’re nursing, it could be related to something you eat.

Allergic reactions don’t always happen immediately. Keep in mind it can take up to three weeks to see a skin reaction after an initial exposure. 

Bacterial dermatitis

This type of diaper rash is caused by bacteria — most commonly group A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Symptoms that indicate bacterial dermatitis include pus, blisters, bleeding, fever, and lethargy. Call your pediatrician if you suspect a bacterial infection as you’ll likely need antibiotics to treat it.

What are the treatments for diaper rash?

Diaper rash treatments at home typically involve changing diapers more frequently and using an OTC cream or jelly. Most diaper rashes are mild and can be treated with creams and ointments available at your local grocery and drug store (CVS and Walgreens) or big box retailer (Target and Walmart) and club store (Costco and Sam’s Club). 

Diaper-changing tips

• One of the most effective ways to treat and prevent diaper rash is to change soiled diapers more frequently. If possible, it’s best to change the diaper each time it’s soiled, even if it’s just urine. Minimizing skin contact with urine and poop is helpful in preventing diaper rash from reoccurring. 

• Use the most absorbent disposable diapers available to help keep the diaper area as dry as possible for the times you can’t immediately change the diaper.

• After using baby wipes, make sure the diaper area is dry before putting on a new diaper. Putting a diaper on wet or damp skin may cause diaper rash. Avoid using baby powder or cornstarch to dry the area because the powder can be inhaled by your baby and it could harm their lungs.

• If using cloth diapers, use a fragrance-free laundry detergent and rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove all soap residue. Make sure they’re completely dry prior to using again.

• Dress your baby in cool, breathable clothing that isn’t tight or constricting.

Diaper rash creams and ointments

Many companies offer creams and ointments that can help soothe irritated skin and provide a barrier to urine and poop. Some popular brands include Desitin, Triple Paste, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, Aquaphor, and Vaseline.

Diaper rash prescription remedies

If the diaper rash is bacterial, see your pediatrician to get a prescription for topical or oral antibiotics. Make sure to follow the instructions for the full course of treatment.

How can I prevent diaper rash?

While there’s no way to 100% prevent diaper rash, there are steps you can take to minimize the chances of them from happening. Some of these tips are similar to the treatments described above.

• Use chemical-free dye-free super absorbent diapers

• Make sure the diaper fits properly (not too tight); if in doubt, size up.

• Change diapers immediately each time it’s soiled, including overnight.

• Use fragrance-free hypoallergenic alcohol-free baby wipes that contain no chemical additives or preservatives. 

• Pat the diaper area dry or let it air dry before putting on a new diaper.

• Dress your baby in loose, breathable clothing. If possible, let them go without pants at home.

• Apply barrier cream or ointment over the diaper area to shield your baby’s skin from moisture even when they don’t have a diaper rash.

• Allow diaper-free time at home. Lay a thick towel over tiles or hard floors in case there’s an accident and let your baby play for 10-30 minutes sans diaper.

• Monitor your diet (if you’re breastfeeding) and your baby’s diet (if they’re on solids). 
  
  

When do I need to see a doctor for diaper rash?

Most cases of diaper rash are mild and can be cleared up within a few days with at-home treatments. If it doesn’t improve by then, or gets worse, call your pediatrician to make sure it isn’t something more serious or to determine whether a stronger treatment is necessary. If you suspect a bacterial infection, call the doctor.

How can baby wipes help with diaper rash?

While diaper rashes are linked to wearing diapers and how frequently they’re changed, baby wipes are part of the diaper changing process and can play a role in helping to minimize the chances of diaper rashes.

Diaper rashes are most often associated with extended skin contact with urine and poop, but they can also be caused or exacerbated by excess moisture from a baby wipe. Water is the number one ingredient of baby wipes — and water is essential to cleaning and wiping during diaper changes — but if your baby wipes are too wet, you may inadvertently be creating a moist environment when you put a diaper back on. And that moist environment could contribute to diaper rash or other skin irritation.

Moisture level varies by brand so try out a few to determine which brand has the right balance of moisture. You want one that is wet enough for effective cleaning, but not so wet that you have to get a towel to pat the area dry before putting on a fresh diaper. (Keep in mind that most daycare providers won’t have time for this added step.)

You also want a baby wipe that is durable and strong enough to handle diaper blowouts, while also being gentle and soft on your baby’s delicate skin. 

Other things to consider are the cleansing ingredients. Make sure that the wipes are hypoallergenic, alcohol-free, and free of parabens and phthalates. Potty Training for Girls

For your daughter, the process of using the toilet—and the clean-up needed afterward—can be confusing at first. Toddlers learn through imitation, so watching Mom, Grandma, or even a big sister go through each step will make it easier for your daughter to remember and repeat herself. Be patient, stay calm, and be sure to positively reinforce each step as she tries it for herself.  

Here are some steps to follow when teaching your daughter how to use flushable wipes:

1. After she has successfully urinated in the potty, place a Nice ’N CLEAN® Flushable Wipe across her hand. Explain that she will use this to wipe away any wetness on her vaginal area and bottom to clean up.

2. Show her how to carefully wipe her bottom from front to back. She can do this from the front or from behind depending on her coordination level (wiping from behind is recommended). This prevents bringing bacteria from the rectum to the vagina or bladder, which can lead to irritation and infection. If this seems too hard for her to do at first, start by showing her how to pat the area dry instead.

3. Once she gets the hang of wiping after urination, start teaching her how to wipe after a bowel movement. Potty Training for Boys

Try to maintain a positive, upbeat, and encouraging attitude during the process, especially in front of your child, and be understanding about inevitable mistakes and messes.

Here are some steps to follow when teaching your son how to use flushable wipes:

1. Many parents find it easier to teach their sons to urinate sitting down at first. If you decide to do this, it’s a good idea to show him how to use a wet wipe to clean his penis afterward.

Most children can start wiping independently around ages 4-5 but you may need to help do a final wipe with bowel movements until they’re a little older (unless you’re okay with poop-stained underwear).

Below, we share the best ways to clean each of these germ-infested items. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting these items can help prevent or minimize the chances of your family getting sick. 

How to clean strollers

Strollers can get dirty and sticky, especially if you use it for diaper changes or your toddler snacks while riding in it. Here are 5 steps to follow when cleaning and disinfecting your stroller:

1. Consult the stroller’s owner manual or check the manufacturer’s website for care instructions. 

2. Remove visible grime with a vacuum and a damp cloth. 

3. Clean the hard parts (frame, handles, cup holders, etc.) with disinfecting wipes. If it’s a food-contact area, such as the food tray, go over the area with potable water after the disinfectant formula dries, and then allow it to air dry again. 

4. Clean the fabric parts with a damp cloth dipped in warm soapy water. Go over it again with a damp cloth dipped in only water, then let air dry completely.

5. Clean the wheels by using a brush to remove sand and dirt from the tires and rims, then scrubbing them with soapy warm water, and rinsing off with clear water (using a hose is the easiest way).

How to clean pacifiers and sippy cups

Pacifiers and sippy cups are constantly exposed to your child’s mouth so should be cleaned frequently.

Pacifiers should be washed with warm soapy water each time it falls on the floor, a table, car seat, or any other surface where it might be exposed to germs. It’s a good idea to carry extra pacifiers for this reason. You can boil them or sanitize them, but doctors say dunking them into warm water with some dish detergent will kill most bacteria and viruses that may cause your child to get sick or get an infection.

Sippy cups should also be washed frequently with warm soapy water. Some of them may be top-rack dishwasher safe. Check the packaging for manufacturer guidance on the best way to wash them. Here are 5 steps to follow when cleaning sippy cups: 

1. Rinse them out immediately if you can’t wash them right away. Don’t allow milk or juice to sit in it.

2. Disassemble it prior to washing. Mold can grow in hard-to-clean areas, like the spout, valve, or straw, so it’s important to wash all the parts separately.

3. Soak it in warm or hot soapy water for about 15 minutes. This is especially important if there’s any dried or sticky residue from milk or juice that needs to be loosened.

4. Wash each part thoroughly. Consider using a straw or nipple brush, toothbrush, toothpick, or pipe cleaner to get into all the tiny crevices where mold could grow.

5. Let air dry thoroughly on a drying rack. Don’t set them on a towel to air dry as the cloth can harbor bacteria.
   
   

How to clean plush animals

Plush animals get a lot of love from kids. Unfortunately, that also means they pick up a lot of germs, especially if they’re taken outside of the house. 

To clean plush toys, such as stuffed animals, first check the label for care instructions from the manufacturer. If they’re machine washable, place it in a large mesh laundry bag, and toss it into the machine on the gentle cycle. For drying, select the low-heat setting or dry with a hair dryer. If they’re non-washable, dip a clean cloth into warm soapy water, wring it out, and gently spot clean the entire toy. Rinse out the soapy water from the cloth, and go over the toy again. Let air dry completely or dry with a hair dryer.

How to clean diaper bags

Check the label on the diaper bag to see if there are care instructions. Depending on the material and style, cleaning can range from spot cleaning to tossing it into the washing machine. In general, wiping down and spot cleaning should be safe to do on any type of material. Only use a washing machine if the manufacturer label clearly states it’s safe to do so or you risk damaging your diaper bag.

Wiping down your diaper bag once a week is a good idea. If there are any spills or messes that occur between the weekly cleanings, they should be addressed immediately, especially if it could leave a stain. 

A deep cleaning is recommended at least every 6 months. To do a deep clean, follow these steps:

1. Take everything out of your diaper bag, including everything in all the pockets and compartments. Leave any zippers and clasps open once emptied.

2. Holding it upside down, shake the bag out over a garbage can or outside so loose crumbs and dirt fall out.

3. Use a vacuum attachment to remove any remaining dirt, dust, and debris inside the bag.

4. Mix warm water with mild laundry detergent in a bucket or bowl. Dip in a clean cloth or rag and wring it out. Use the damp cloth to wipe down the entire inside and outside of the bag, including inside compartments, pockets, straps, and handles. 

5. Go over it again with a clean damp cloth (no soap, only water).

6. Let the diaper bag air dry completely before using it again. Hang it somewhere with all the zippers and clasps open so it gets as much air circulation as possible. You can also let it dry outside under the sun.
   
   

How to clean TV remote controls

The television remote isn’t technically a kids’ item, but it’s likely touched frequently by children and teens to watch their favorite shows and movies. And since snacking is common while watching TV, the remote likely gets its fair share of being touched by greasy or sticky hands. 

The recommendation for TV remotes is to wipe it down with a disinfecting wipe at least once a day. If it’s visibly greasy, sticky, or dirty, then clean it immediately.

1. Consult the stroller’s owner manual or check the manufacturer’s website for care instructions. Make sure to look up the instructions for your specific stroller model, especially if you want to dismantle it to get a deeper clean.

2. Remove visible grime. Wipe off any visible dirt, stains, and crumbs. For loose dirt and crumbs, you can use an attachment on your vacuum or a hand-held vacuum. Pay particular attention to the seams where the seat meets the back because crumbs can get stuck there.

3. Clean the hard parts. Use disinfecting wipes for hard plastic or metal parts of the stroller, including the frame, food tray, handles, cup holders, and any other nonporous parts. Make sure to follow the contact time on the product label to properly disinfect the areas. If it’s a food-contact area, such as the food tray, go over the area with potable water after the disinfectant formula dries, and then allow it to air dry again. 

4. Clean the fabric parts. Some strollers have removable fabric which can be hand-washed or washed in a washing machine. Before washing, first do a colorfast test to make sure the colors don’t bleed. For the strollers without machine-washable fabric, make a solution of warm water and soap. Dip a clean cloth into it and wring it out so it’s damp, then use it to clean the fabric parts of the stroller seat, the hood (or canopy), and the basket under the stroller seat. You may need a soft fabric brush or toothbrush to scrub off stubborn stains. Get another clean cloth or thoroughly rinse out the soap in the first one, then go over all the soft parts of the stroller again with just water. Then let air dry completely.

5. Clean the wheels. If they’re visibly covered in dirt or mud, they should be washed immediately. Otherwise, wheels should be cleaned at least once a week if you take the stroller out for a walk every day. This is especially important if you store the stroller inside your home instead of in the garage. You can clean stroller wheels by using a brush to remove sand and dirt from the tires and rims, then scrubbing them with soapy warm water, and rinsing off with clear water (using a hose is the easiest way). 

When you’re done cleaning, it’s important that you let the entire stroller completely air dry before you fold it, store it, or use it again. 

Cleaning your baby stroller can be a chore, but it’s not as hard as you might think and it’s well worth the effort to keep your little one safer and healthier! Plus, cleaning your stroller regularly helps it work better and last longer. And if you decide to sell it when your child outgrows it, a regularly cleaned and well maintained stroller will fetch a higher price.
