Whether you’re chomping at the bit and can’t wait to go back to your regular commute or planning a more cautious approach, many of us are getting the call to return to the office. With the necessary precautions against COVID-19 and all its variants still a part of our day-to-day lives, there are simple steps you can take at the office to help stay healthy.

New Office Protocols that Enhance Safety

According to a recent U.S. poll of a thousand people who returned to working in their offices this past year, 71% of the respondents said that they favored a hybrid work model that split their time between the office and working remotely. When asked for specific reasons, 46% pointed to possible exposure to COVID-19 or a variant of it, and 30% were concerned about working and interacting with unvaccinated coworkers.

In a Forbes.com article, companies around the world have taken these concerns on board and have put together protocols to alleviate their employees’ health concerns, including:

Scheduling regular cleanings with reputable professional firms, including deep disinfection

Providing cleaning and disinfecting guidelines, training, and tools for employees

Updating the company sick policy and basic hygiene reminders

Following the recommended guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Many companies such as Google, Apple, and Goldman Sachs are also implementing new floor plans to accommodate social distancing, as well as new schedules that allow for hybrid hours (e.g., three days in the office and two days working from home), working in shifts to limit the number of people in the building at once, and other similar arrangements.

Personal responsibility for staying healthy also plays a role. Employees are expected to take steps to protect themselves and others, such as wearing masks during in-person meetings, social distancing, and cleaning and disinfecting individual workspaces after use.

Arm Yourself With the Right Tools

Remember the excitement (and a little ambivalence) of the days leading up to the first day of school? There was something about a new backpack, new shoes, even new pencils, notebooks, and art supplies that made starting fresh seem like a positive step. Why not think of preparing for your return to the workplace in the same way?

Most office managers are making a point of providing hand sanitizing stations, disposable masks, motion-sensor soap dispensers in bathrooms, and cleaning products and equipment as part of their return-to-the-office rollout. But similar to having your own lunch box and school supplies, packing the following into your work bag will help you feel more empowered and ready to handle the "newer new normal."

Hand Wipes

While there’s no match for soap and water, Nice 'N CLEAN® Sani-Hands® Antibacterial Hand Wipes are the perfect solution when you’re on-the-go and need a convenient and effective way to clean your hands. Our alcohol-free antibacterial wipes contain benzalkonium chloride, and have been clinically shown to kill 99.9% of the most common bacteria [1]. Made with renewable plant-based fibers, each hypoallergenic wipe is infused with natural aloe to prevent dryness and provide a moisturizing and soothing experience. They’re available in portable, resealable 20-count packages that can be kept in your purse, car, briefcase, and at the office.

If you are looking for an alcohol-based sanitizing hand wipe, look no further than Nice 'N CLEAN® SANI-HANDS® Sanitizing Hand Wipes. Made with a proprietary 70% alcohol formula that is clinically proven to kill 99.99% of bacteria [1] on hands, Nice ’N CLEAN® SANI-HANDS® Sanitizing Hand Wipes are more effective than gel sanitizers because they also wipe away dirt, grime, and other impurities on your skin. Individually wrapped for portability and convenience, these high-alcohol wipes also contain aloe and vitamin E to hydrate and protect your skin.

Disinfecting Wipes

Every day when you arrive at the office, take a moment to move everything off of your desk and completely wipe it down with a surface wipe, such as Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes. Our clinically-tested disinfecting solution is effective against 99.9% of bacteria [2] and viruses [3], including the COVID-19 virusɸ. In addition to the top of your desk, also use them to clean the drawers and drawer handles, and anywhere else on the desk you touch during the workday.

Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are also great for your keyboard, mouse, and any other items with hard, nonporous surfaces (desk lamp, framed photos, printer, shredder, stapler, tape dispenser, 3-hole punch, pen holder, etc.)

To disinfect your monitor, use a fresh Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipe to gently wipe the screen. Don’t forget to clean the back, sides, and stand of your monitor as well. If you see any streaks after the screen dries, use a microfiber cloth to remove them.

Always use a fresh wipe for each area to avoid cross-contamination. Be sure to allow all the surfaces to air dry completely for maximum disinfecting power.

Lens Wipes

What good is a clean monitor if your vision is obstructed with dirty lenses? If you wear glasses, make sure you always have crystal clear views with regular use of Nice 'N CLEAN® Lens Wipes! Our ammonia-free formula is non-scratching, non-streaking, and anti-fog. Each wipe is individually packaged so they’re easy to keep handy in your pocket, your laptop bag, and your desk drawer.

Flushable Wipes

It has probably been a while since you’ve needed to use a shared restroom, so don’t forget to pack some personal wipes in your back-to-the-workplace kit. Our 100% biodegradable [4] Nice 'N CLEAN® SecureFLUSH™ Technology Flushable Wipes are made from ultra-strong quilted material to help you feel confidently clean. You can flush up to five wipes at a time [5] as they break apart five times faster in water than the leading toilet paper does. Made with baking soda — an effective, all-natural cleaning solution — they also contain three times more moisturizing aloe and vitamin E [6] to leave even the most sensitive skin feeling soothed and refreshed.

Head Back to the Office with Confidence

Any back-to-the-workplace anxieties and concerns you may feel are valid. It’s been a long time since we’ve been in our previous work environments and things will definitely be different when we return. It’s good to know companies are taking extra precautions to protect employee health, and we can also take extra steps by using Nice ’N CLEAN® Wipes at the office. Our comprehensive line of wipes was developed to make life easier, healthier, and more convenient for everyone.

The holidays are fast approaching — and for many of us, this means opening our home to friends and family. After months of working from home, working out at home, staycations, distance learning, and general cocooning, it's probably safe to say our living spaces could use some freshening up before our guests arrive. In this article, we’ll go over cleaning tips you can use to clean and disinfect those high-traffic areas in each room with the right wet wipe for the job!

The Right Wipe for the Right Job

Before you begin your holiday cleaning and guest prep, you’ll need to make sure you have adequate supplies. While it is possible to find uses for wet wipes in every room of your house, you need to use the right wipe for each task — and each surface — to ensure optimal effectiveness and efficiency.

Disinfecting Wipes

Perfect for cleaning hard, nonporous surfaces such as kitchen counters, toilets, and frequently touched items like doorknobs and light switches, disposable disinfectant wipes like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are convenient because you don’t need a separate roll of paper towels and a bottle of disinfecting solution to achieve the cleanliness you need. Be sure to read and follow the instructions on how long to keep the area wet for it to be effective. These wipes will be your go-to tool for cleaning and disinfecting your home before your guests arrive — and maintaining your home’s freshness during their stay.

Flushable Wipes

In addition to providing a more comfortable and soothing wiping experience, flushable wet wipes are also more effective at cleaning your bottom than toilet paper alone. Nice 'N CLEAN® SecureFLUSH™ Technology Flushable Wipes are not only safe for well-maintained sewers and septic systems, they’re also biodegradable [1] and break apart 5 times faster than the leading toilet paper. Be sure to provide a supply of these flushable [2] wipes in each of your bathrooms for your guests!

Hand Wipes

While washing with soap and water is always best, hand wipes are great in a pinch if you don’t have easy access to running water, but still need clean hands. Nice 'N CLEAN® Hand Wipes are proven to kill and remove 99% of the most common bacteria on hands while also wiping away dirt and grime. Our plant-based hand wipes come in two formulas: 70% Alcohol and Antibacterial. Both are more effective than hand gels in removing bacteria, dirt, grime, and other impurities from hands. Slip some of these handy wipes in a welcome basket in your guest room, along with some travel-sized body wash, shampoo, towels, and bottled water to help guests feel more at home.

Personal Care and Cosmetic Wipes

These include wipes that are tailor-made for specific uses, such as facial cleansing cloths, acne treatment pads, and makeup-removing wipes. Body wash cloths can be refreshing on a hot summer day, after a sweaty workout, or in lieu of a shower during a camping trip. Having these available in your medicine cabinet in the guest bathroom will be appreciated!

Baby Wipes

Perhaps the best known of all wet wipes, baby wipes are specially designed with gentle formulas for sensitive and delicate baby skin. From changing dirty diapers to cleaning up after a messy meal, these disposable wipes are versatile and convenient, even long after your little one is potty trained! While formulas and wipe material vary by brand, Nice 'N CLEAN® BABY Wipes are made with purified water and naturally-derived ingredients that help keep baby’s skin healthy. Having some available in your home during the holidays is a great idea in case someone drops by for a visit with their little ones in tow.

Holiday Cleaning Made Easy

Before the cookies are baked, the eggnog is decanted, and the candles are lit, the house must be prepped for holiday fun! Fortunately, there’s a wipe that can do it all! If you guessed disinfecting wipes, then you’re correct!

Please keep in mind:

Disinfecting wipes are not flushable and should be thrown away immediately after use.

Disinfecting wipes should never be reused to prevent cross-contamination. Use a fresh wipe for every surface.

Always allow the surface to air dry thoroughly according to the directions on the package to ensure effectiveness.

Always read and follow the directions on the package before using disinfecting wipes. They are meant for hard, nonporous surfaces. Do not use them on soft furnishings, such as carpets, curtains, mattresses, and sofa cushions.

If using on a food-contact surface such as a kitchen counter, rinse with potable water after the disinfecting wipe formula dries.

Disinfecting the Bathroom

Disinfecting wipes are perfect for cleaning your toilet, bathtub, shower walls, bathroom tiles, faucet, sink, and vanity counter. Be sure to use a fresh wipe on each area and wet the entire surface with the disinfecting formula on the wipe. Then allow it to dry according to the package directions for optimal efficacy. Contact times for killing viruses and bacteria vary by brand and generally range from 3 to 10 minutes. For example, Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria [3] and viruses [4] in 3 minutes, including the COVID-19 virusɸ.

Once you’ve taken care of the major areas, finish up by using fresh wipes on the light switches, door handles, faucet handles, drawer handles, and towel racks.

For stubborn stains, consider a disinfecting wipe with texture for a more effective clean. Lemon-scented Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes have a scrubbing side for removing gunk and grime, and a wiping side for cleaning and deodorizing. Plus, it leaves your bathroom smelling clean and refreshing.

Disinfecting the Kitchen

Use disinfecting wipes to clean kitchen counters (especially after handling raw meat), the stove, backsplash tiles, faucet handles, and the sink. They’re also great for cleaning the handles of the refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, and microwave. Your trash can also deserves a thorough cleaning inside and outside regularly.

Again, the key here is to ensure each surface is cleaned with a fresh wipe and is saturated with the disinfecting formula. Make sure you allow all the surfaces to air dry thoroughly according to the wipe directions. Also, after using disinfecting wipes on food-contact surfaces, always be sure to thoroughly rinse them with potable water.

Disinfecting the Kids’ Room or Playroom

Ah, time to enter the domain of our little and lovable germ-spreaders. Following the directions on the wipes package, use disinfecting wipes on nonporous surfaces such as your children’s furniture, storage areas, and toy chests. While you can use disinfecting wipes on nonporous plastic toys, if your child or any of their playmates tend to put toys in their mouth, be sure to rinse the toy with potable water after disinfecting.

Disinfecting the Bedrooms

Use disinfecting wipes for wiping down bedroom furniture, light switches, and drawer handles. If you have a TV in your bedroom, give the remote control a wipe down as well as light switches and door handles. Depending on the material of your headboard and bed frame, you can also wipe them down. Again, allow the surfaces to dry thoroughly, and use extra wipes to cover all surfaces if needed.

Disinfecting the Living Room

While it’s not recommended that you use disinfecting wipes on soft furnishings like cushions, rugs, and drapes, there are places where a disinfecting wipe can be effective in cleaning and protecting your loved ones and guests. One of the germiest items in your house is the television remote control. It’s something we recommend disinfecting daily, especially if you like to snack and channel surf at the same time. Other living room areas that you can use disinfecting wipes to clean are tables, lamp bases, light switches, bookcases, and shelving.

Disinfecting the Dining Room

If you’re hosting a holiday meal, this is where the magic happens (besides the kitchen, of course). Before you set out the fancy china and silverware, use disinfecting wipes to clean your dining table, chairs, sideboard, and any other nonporous furniture.

Host a Nice and Clean Holiday Gathering

As more and more people get vaccinated, social gatherings are getting safer. But cleaning is still as important as ever.

Being a good host during the holidays has always been a great (and stressful) responsibility. It doesn’t only involve preparing food and planning fun activities and events; it also involves cleaning and preparing your home to help ensure your guests feel safe and comfortable.

As you prepare to spend time with loved ones this holiday season, celebrate with peace of mind, knowing your home is cleaned with the help of the Nice ’N CLEAN® brand. We’re here to help your family (and friends) stay healthy and well, one wipe at a time.

Many of us are working from home and plan to continue for the foreseeable future, at least part time. That probably sounds safer from a hygiene perspective, so you may be shocked to learn just how unsanitary your home office might be. Researchers at the University of Arizona found that the average desktop keyboard has 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat. (Yuck!)

Since most of us don’t have a professional cleaning crew coming to our home each evening to empty our trash, vacuum up our cookie crumbs, and wipe down our coffee cup rings, we’ve created this office cleaning checklist for how to clean and disinfect your work-from-home zone!

3-Step Everyday Spruce-Up

Just like your daily cup of coffee, cleaning and disinfecting your work area should be a daily habit. Each day—before you power up or power down—take a few minutes to sanitize these home office areas:

1. Clear the desk

Let’s face it — you eat at your desk, probably multiple times a day. You may be joined for a snack by your kids, spouse, roommate, or loved ones. Take a moment to move everything off of your desk and completely wipe it down with a surface wipe, such as Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes. Our clinically-tested disinfecting solution is effective against 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including the COVID-19 virusɸ. Clean off not only the top of your desk, but also the drawers and drawer handles, and anywhere else on the desk you touch during the workday. You can also use surface wipes for the hard, nonporous parts of your desk chair. Check the manufacturer guide for cleaning instructions for any cloth or soft materials.

2. Sanitize your laptop or computer keyboard, mouse, and other high-touch desk items

The most high-touch computer items are your keyboard and mouse, which deserve a daily wipedown even if you’re the only one that uses it. If it’s a shared family computer or laptop, you may want to clean it multiple times a day, especially if anyone is prone to snacking while typing. If pets enjoy visiting your home office, it’s even more reason to clean due to the dander and hair floating in the air. In short: make sure you take time every day to give your computer and related accessories a good cleaning.

We recommend starting by using an air can to blow out crumbs and debris from between the keys and all those nooks and crannies where dust and dirt collect. Then, follow up with a gentle wipedown all over your keyboard, mouse, and any other items with hard, nonporous surfaces (desk lamp, framed photos, printer, shredder, stapler, tape dispenser, 3-hole punch, pen holder, etc.) with a sanitizing wipe such as Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes. Follow the directions on the label to ensure the wipe is safe for your equipment, and allow the surface to air dry according to the product label for maximum effectiveness. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are an efficient option because each wipe is over 60% larger than a standard wipe so you can cover more surface area with fewer wipes. They also clean, sanitize, deodorize, and disinfect in one step. Our proprietary formula kills viruses [1] and bacteria [2] in 3 minutes.

3. Wipe down your computer or laptop screen

Let’s move on to your laptop screen or monitor — or both, as more of us are using multiple screens for efficiency at home. According to CNET.com, your first step should always be to unplug and disconnect your monitor to protect yourself from a potential shock. (They also recommend removing the batteries from your laptop if your setup includes them.) Then, remove all of the dust on the monitor using a clean microfiber cloth.

To disinfect your screen, use a fresh Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipe to gently wipe the screen. Don’t forget to clean the back, sides, and stand of your monitor as well. Use a fresh wipe for each area to avoid cross-contamination. Be sure to allow the surfaces to air dry completely for maximum disinfecting power. If you see any streaks after the screen dries, use a microfiber cloth to remove them.

Side note: What good is a clean monitor if your vision is obstructed with dirty lenses? If you wear glasses, make sure you always have crystal clear views with regular use of Nice ’N CLEAN® Lens Wipes! Our ammonia-free formula is non-scratching, non-streaking, and anti-fog.

3-Step Deep Clean Every Week

Everywhere from office buildings to retail stores engage professional cleaning crews to deep clean and sanitize their spaces regularly to help keep workers and customers safe from the spread of bacteria. Once a week, consider taking a tip from the pros and add these three extra steps to clean and sanitize the other areas in your home office.

1. Clean above you

Take the time to wipe off the tops of bookcases, ceiling fans, and other higher surfaces that are often forgotten about. By removing the dust and debris — and any bacteria that may be hiding up there — with a Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipe each week, you’ll breathe better and feel better, too.

2. Clean around you

Do you have any framed pictures on your walls? A whiteboard or message board? Is your workspace near a window with blinds or shades? Once a week, use some Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes to remove dust, cobwebs, smudges, and stains — not to mention the bacteria that love to breed on frequently touched items, such as light switches, door handles, and remote controls.

3. Clean below you

Whether your home office has carpet, hardwood floors, or tiles, cleaning your floor should be done at least once a week. It should also include wiping down any skirting, vents, or other hard surfaces where dirt, grime, and germs can accumulate. If you snack while you work, or work in a high-traffic area, such as the kitchen or family room, you may want to do this more often.

Make Cleaning Part of Your Work Routine

We know that at the end of a long work week, the last thing you probably want to do is to clean your office. But there’s no reason you have to do it on Fridays. If you want to do these steps on Mondays to kickstart your week, or on Wednesdays to take a break from your work routine, feel free! The key is to make these weekly steps a habit, which will prevent your work area from becoming a breeding ground for germs.

Keeping your home office clean and sanitized is an investment in your health and well-being, so it should be a part of your daily work routine. So stock up on Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes and set aside a few minutes of “me time” each day to ensure your home office is a clean and productive place to be.

Tips for Moving During A Pandemic

After months of working from home, shopping from home, cooking at home, and hours upon hours of staying at home, you may be ready for a change — maybe even a change of address. But whether you’re daydreaming about relocating or knee-deep in boxes and bubble wrap, there’s more to moving than meets the eye: viruses and bacteria, to be specific. Here are five helpful tips for cleaning and disinfecting during your move so that you — and your stuff — stay safer.

Moving is Stressful Without a Pandemic

According to University Hospitals, “the five most stressful life events people experience are:

Death of a loved one

Divorce

Moving

Major illness or injury

Job loss

You’ll notice that smack in the middle of this list is moving. On the plus side, the idea of a fresh start sounds great. The logistics of relocation, however, are stressful — and never more so than right now, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While moving is stressful — and there’s really no way around it — the best thing you can do is to take steps to make the process less stressful.

5 Tips for Minimizing Stress During a Move

The solution to logistics is usually a well-conceived plan, which takes the guesswork out of the process and makes it more manageable. Here are five tips from the professionals at Moving.com that will help keep your household goods and your new home safe from any germs they’re exposed to during your move.

1. Stock up on your supplies.

When it comes to cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting surfaces, the old adage, “Use the right tool for the right job,” definitely applies. And when it comes to moving, we recommend having plenty on hand.

The cleaning process removes dirt, dust, and germs — but it does not kill germs. Think of it as your first step in your plan of attack. This can be done with soap and water or any other cleaning solution, so be sure to stock up and have plenty on hand.

Sanitizing products reduce the amount of germs to a safe level defined by public health standards, making them the tools for step two in your process. Always check the labels on your sanitizing products and use them as directed for maximum efficiency and safety.

The tools you’ll need for step three are disinfecting products. Ranging from diluted bleach solutions to specially formulated home disinfecting products, they kill viruses and bacteria on nonporous, hard surfaces. Again, following label instructions is crucial when using these EPA-registered products, especially when it comes to the contact time, the length of time the surface needs to stay wet for the product to be effective. Some formulas can take as long as 10 minutes, so again, invest in plenty in the event you need to reapply on your surfaces for maximum efficiency.

Other items you may need include a broom, mop, clean cloths and/or paper towels, rubber gloves, face masks, hand sanitizer and/or hand soap, and microfiber cloths to minimize streaking. Always work in a well-ventilated area, and take plenty of breaks in fresh air to protect yourself from possible fumes.

2. Have hand sanitizing wipes handy for everyone helping with your move.

Whether your family and friends are helping you with a DIY move, or you’ve booked a moving company to handle everything (literally), make it easy for everyone to keep their hands clean during the process by placing plenty of hand sanitizing wipes throughout your old place and your new place, particularly by your front and back doors. Nice 'N CLEAN® SANI-HANDS® Antibacterial Hand Wipes are a great choice because they kill and remove 99.9% of bacteria [1] on hands. Our hand wipes also clean away dirt and grime — something gel sanitizers don’t do. And because they are infused with aloe and vitamin E, they won’t dry out or chafe skin with frequent use. Keeping them in sight will serve as a reminder for everyone to use them as they come in before they start touching surfaces. (We also recommend keeping hand soap and paper towels in the bathrooms and the kitchen for their use as well.)

LEARN MORE: Hand Sanitizer: Wipes vs. Gels

3. Leave the doors and windows open.

By keeping the doors open during the loading and unloading process, you’ll not only make it easier for everyone to carry items in and out, but you’ll also help prevent everyone from touching doorknobs and the doors themselves — high-traffic areas that are common transmitters of bacteria, viruses, and germs. Having all your windows open will allow for better ventilation in places where several people may be working at one time.

4. Disinfect high-traffic and high-touch areas frequently.

Moving takes time, whether it’s done by your friends or by the pros. More time indoors means more touching of surfaces like doorknobs, railings, banisters, light switches, toilets, tables, chairs, phones, tablets, and more. Every so often, clean and sanitize these surfaces during the loading and unloading of your items with wet wipes — like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes — to help protect everyone involved. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are proven to kill 99.9% of viruses [2] and bacteria [3], including the COVID-19 virusɸ in 3 minutes. Use as many as necessary for these surfaces to stay wet for effective disinfection — and use a fresh wipe for every surface to avoid cross-contamination. After your move is finished, be sure to clean and disinfect all these surfaces again in your new place.

5. Wipe down your moving boxes.

This may come as a surprise, but in a 2020 New England Journal of Medicine study, researchers found that the virus that causes COVID-19 can remain stable and detectable on “cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours.” Before you open your plastic bins and moving boxes, use Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes to wipe them down, and allow them to air dry. Once you’ve unpacked, be sure to remove the cardboard from your home as soon as you can. As you open and unload boxes and bins, you can use Nice 'N CLEAN® SANI-HANDS® Antibacterial Hand Wipes to clean your hands until the process is done. After everything is unpacked and all the cardboard boxes are thrown out, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Make Moving Less Maddening and More Manageable

Moving is hard, but you can take steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your belongings with our tips above. Feeling more in control of a stressful situation can help you power through.

Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are now available in store at Costco warehouses nationwide. They are an easy and convenient way to clean, sanitize, and disinfect nonporous surfaces and items — from your old home to your new one.

How to Host a Pandemic-Safe Garage Sale

As the weather warms up, and with COVID-19 vaccinations happening across the nation, many people are looking forward to resuming some favorite summer activities — including attending and hosting garage sales. If you’ve cleared out some of your old belongings, hosting a garage sale could be a nice way to make some extra cash. However, due to COVID-19, you’ll want to make sure you take some extra steps when preparing for your event to make sure it’s safe for any potential customers who swing by. Even if all of your customers are vaccinated, precautions are still recommended.

Make Masks a Must

The facts speak for themselves: Wearing a mask — combined with frequent hand-washing and social distancing — helps slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. And while many of the people who come to your yard sale may be vaccinated, they still owe it to all of the others around them to wear a mask. Let possible attendees know up-front that wearing a mask is required to shop at your garage sale. If you publicize your event on social media or put up signs in your neighborhood, make it clear that masks must be worn the entire time while browsing your garage sale.

Of course, you’ll want to have your mask on to set a good example — and be sure to provide masks for any friends and family members who are helping out. Our Nice 'N CLEAN® triple-ply cotton face masks are lightweight, soft, and machine-washable [1]. Most importantly, these masks meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s mask guidelines so you know your helpers will be better protected. They’re available in adult and child sizes so they provide a comfortable fit for even the “junior salespeople” at your garage sale!

Create a Sanitizing Table

As we gradually move toward business as usual, you’ll notice that everywhere you go — libraries, supermarkets, restaurants, shopping malls — businesses are welcoming us with the opportunity to clean our hands with wet wipes, slip on a pair of latex gloves, or put on a disposable mask once we enter.

This makes good business sense for your tag sale, too. This way, visitors can protect themselves before they start browsing your items! At the end of the driveway or another convenient location by your sale’s entrance, set up a sanitizing table with a stack of disposable paper masks, a box of disposable gloves, and lots of Nice 'N CLEAN® SANI-HANDS® Antibacterial Hand Wipes, which kill and remove 99.9% of bacteria [2] on hands. Hypoallergenic and infused with aloe and vitamin E, our hand wipes are more effective than gel sanitizers because they also wipe away dirt and grime. Be sure to put out a large trash can next to your sanitizing station so shoppers have a place to throw away their used hand wipes, masks, and gloves.

ALSO READ: Tips for Cleaning Your Entire House with Wet Wipes

Set Up Your Sale to Encourage Social Distancing

You’re probably wondering, “How do I manage a garage sale so that everyone has six feet of social distancing space?” We wondered that, too.

According to Brandi Radulovich — whose YouTube channel, Eternal Harvest Décor, deals with all things DIY — the key is creating a layout ahead of time to ‘guide’ attendees from start to finish, instead of allowing them to wander aimlessly from table to table and item to item.

Think of it like the line at a wedding reception buffet — they are carefully set up to make sure guests can avail themselves of everything being offered, instead of forming a stampede for the carving station while the veggies grow cold. By ‘herding’ yard sale shoppers through, you’ll ensure everyone sees everything available for purchase while helping them maintain some space between each other.

“Keep this path in mind when laying out your sale tables to ensure proper social distancing,” Radulovich recommends. “It’s also a good idea to have the path marked for people to follow. Consider using sidewalk chalk, or chalk spray paint to accomplish this.”

Keep in mind, though, that most shoppers will want to pick items up and examine them. Be sure to clean and disinfect your items often during the sale. We recommend using a disinfecting wipe like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes, which are proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria [3] and viruses [4], including the COVID-19 virusɸ in 3 minutes. Be sure to wipe each item individually to avoid cross-contamination, and throw the wipe away in the trash after use. By doing so, you’ll help protect all your customers (and helpers) from the spread of viruses and bacteria, while also keeping each item looking its sparkling best until you make that sale!

Don’t Have a Garage? Try a Virtual Sale!

Maybe you’re an apartment dweller and don’t have your own yard to host a yard sale. Or maybe you’re just not ready to have so many people around all at once. Never fear, the Internet is here!

According to Realtor.com’s Kimberly Dawn Neumann in her online article, “How to Host a Virtual Garage Sale During a Pandemic,” taking advantage of free websites like Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook Marketplace — as well as tried-and-true selling sites like eBay and Amazon Marketplace — will not only help you get rid of your clutter, but also reach a wider audience, which can translate into higher profits.

When you think about it, real-time, in-person yard sales are a bit of a gamble for the seller. You may be competing with other yard sales in the area. The weather may turn on you. And your potential buyers are a very small, local population to begin with. When it comes to price, this scenario doesn’t leave you much wiggle room. However, with an online yard sale, you are casting a much wider net for potential customers — and your item might be so popular it incites a bidding war, driving up the price of your potential sale.

Here again, Neumann stresses the importance of taking COVID-19 precautions. She suggests making it clear in your product descriptions that the item will be disinfected using products like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes, and will be sent to the buyer with minimal handling to minimize potential exposure. “Taking these steps will increase the salability of your items and help keep you and your purchasers safe,” Neumann points out.

Out of the Garage and Into the Light!

After a year of staring at your four walls — and all your belongings — cleaning out your closets and selling off your still-good items is a great way to reduce, reuse, recycle, and take that tentative step to re-acclimating to a life beyond quarantine. Just be sure to follow the CDC’s best practices to keep yourself and your customers safe.
How to Clean and Disinfect Home Gyms

How to Clean and Disinfect Home Gyms

We’re all trying to find ways to improve our well-being, both emotionally and physically — and staying active is an important component of both. Home gyms are a great way to stay healthy while gyms are closed. But whether you’re working out at home or at the gym, make sure you are working out in a safe and clean environment. It’s important to clean and disinfect your exercise equipment regularly.

How to clean weights and weight lifting equipment

If you’re using hand weights — or an entire weightlifting set — in your home gym, keeping this equipment clean entails regular maintenance. Whether they’re metal or covered with rubber, the sweat and oils from the skin, and the gripping, rubbing, and handling that comes from regular use, can make them susceptible to wear and tear, as well as a potential breeding ground for microbes and bacteria.

According to EquipmentGuys.com, a sports facilities installation company that specializes in high school and college gym installations, cleaning these items by mixing a few drops of dish soap with one gallon of water is best. First, moisten a clean cloth with the sudsy water and wipe the weight clean, then dry it well with a cloth to prevent rusting. “We suggest using a stiff plastic bristle brush with the soap/water mix to scrub the handles as well,” says Equipment Guys founder and CEO Matt Purdy. “Then, let it sit for a minute before wiping it clean with a dry cloth.”

If you’re getting ready to pump some iron in the gym, take a few minutes — and a few disinfecting wipes like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes — and wipe down the handles of the weights, making sure to leave them wet and shiny. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria** and viruses*, including the COVID-19 virusɸ in 3 minutes. Be sure to wipe down the bench, too!

How to clean yoga mats

When it comes to yoga mats, we’ll first tell you what not to do — do NOT put it in the washing machine unless it comes with clear instructions that say it’s safe to do so. Many yoga mats contain vinyl, plastic, and other substances that can easily scratch and stress your washer’s inner machinery. The mat could also melt if it gets too hot.

Instead, always wash your yoga mat at home by hand — and do it at least once every two yoga sessions. This will go a long way to ensuring you don’t find yourself battling a case of ringworm, athlete’s foot, or a staph or yeast infection from the bacteria that thrive in the dark, warm, moist environment of a yoga mat.

Here again, dishwashing soap — a few drops in a spray bottle filled with warm water — will help clean your mat, thanks to the chlorine and other common chemicals found in it. Use only a few drops, however, as too much dish soap can leave your mat slippery. Spray the mat liberally, then scrub it gently with a microfiber cloth to keep the stickiness of the mat intact. Be sure to clean both sides of the mat, then rinse it with clean (soap-free) warm water and allow it to air dry. Don’t wring it out, and don’t hang it outside in the sun because it could damage the rubber. Instead, allow it to hang over your shower curtain rod overnight or dry the surface with a towel, then sandwich it between two dry, clean towels for an hour or two to absorb all the excess moisture.

It’s not enough to only clean your yoga mat, though — you also need to disinfect it to make sure you kill all the germs lurking on it. This is especially important if you share your mat with a family member, or use a communal mat at a yoga center. If that’s the case, bring along your Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes with your workout gear and wipe down both sides of the mat with the wipe, then hold it up by the corners until it air dries completely. Repeat the process if you feel it’s necessary. Trust your gut — and your nose — as a smelly mat is a sign of breeding bacteria.

How to clean stationary exercise equipment

Treadmills

If you’re using a treadmill as part of your home gym, you should clean it at least once a week, particularly if there are multiple users. According to LiveStrong.com, keeping your treadmill’s belt in good working order is as easy as these 4 steps:

First, unplug the treadmill before cleaning.

Next, dust the treadmill belt with a surface duster. This will remove buildup on, around, and underneath it.

Then, using a cloth slightly moistened with clean water, gently wipe down the belt, rotating it to clean all of it. Avoid using any kind of cleaning product on the belt unless recommended by the manufacturer.

Finally, using a dry paper towel, rotate the treadmill belt again to dry it thoroughly.

Don’t forget to wipe down the dashboard and any other outer surface you may have touched or sweated on. This can be done with a damp paper towel most of the time. However, once or twice a month, using a wipe like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes on the plastic and metal surfaces will help sanitize and disinfect them. Also use the surface wipe to gently clean the glass areas on the dashboard. If you see any streaking, follow up with a microfiber cloth.

Stationary bikes

If you use a stationary bike at home or in the gym, clean off all the hard, nonporous surfaces with a wet wipe like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes before or after each use. If you’re at home, we recommend cleaning after each use so it has time to air dry and will be ready to go the next day. At the gym, you’ll want to wipe down just before using since you don’t know whether the previous user cleaned it off after use.

If you’re tight on time, you can do a 30-second express clean with just two wet wipes.

Elliptical machines

According to Home Gym Resource, when it comes to an elliptical trainer, a mild dishwashing detergent and clean water are best for removing sweat, dust, grime, and dirt. Avoid bleach and ammonia-based cleaners since they can harm the plastic components found on many elliptical machines.

After each workout, dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe down the machine, being careful not to let water drip into it. Concentrate on the handles and the console, as well as anywhere sweat may have accumulated.

Once a month, unplug the elliptical machine for a deep cleaning. Use a few drops of dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water to clean the machine more thoroughly. Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with the solution, taking care not to make it too wet or sudsy, and carefully wipe down the entire exterior of the machine, including the rollers and guide rails. Then, with a clean, dry cloth, dry off the machine thoroughly. Follow up by wiping the machine down with a wet wipe such as Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes on the plastic and metal surfaces. Allow it to air dry before using again.

Every six months, unplug the machine and remove the plastic covers. Vacuum any visible debris without banging into any of the parts inside, and replace the covers.

Rowing machines

Similar to a stationary bike, wipe down the exterior of your rowing machine to remove sweat and grime after each workout. The pros at Home Gym Resource suggest wiping the machine down with a clean microfiber cloth dampened in a solution of dishwashing soap and warm water. Dry the machine completely with a clean, dry cloth afterward. Follow up by wiping the machine down with Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes on the plastic and metal surfaces to sanitize and disinfect them.

Protect your health as well as your equipment

Your home gym is an investment in your health and well-being, so be sure to show your equipment the same TLC you show yourself. By cleaning and disinfecting them regularly with Nice ’N CLEAN® Wipes, you’ll ensure your equipment stays in good working order, and you’ll stay protected from germs that could cause infection or make you sick.

Tips, Tricks, and Hacks for Perfect Laundry

Laundry is something everyone has to deal with. And it gets harder when you have children. Believe it or not, there are right and wrong ways to do laundry. So we’ve rounded up our best tips, tricks, and hacks for perfect laundry.

Wash frequently

Don’t let your laundry pile up and do multiple loads in one day. Try your best to do laundry at least every other day so your hamper doesn’t become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. This is especially true if any of your laundry is wet or damp. Another reason not to wait -- stains are harder to get out the longer they sit.

Wash heavily soiled items separately and immediately

Anything with bodily fluids — urine, poop, vomit, blood, sweat — on it should be washed immediately in hot water. Any mud or food stains should also be washed right away. It’s best to do a separate load so the germs don’t spread to other pieces of laundry.

Wash face masks after each use

It’s best to have multiple machine-washable masks available so you don’t have to wear the same one multiple times a day. At a minimum, they should be washed after one day of use. Check to see if it’s dryer-safe. The heat can help kill any lingering germs. Air drying masks in a sunny area can also help kill germs.

Wash towels, mats, and rugs separately

Bath towels, kitchen towels, hand towels, and washcloths are likely to carry more germs than your clothes. It’s best to have a separate hamper for them and to wash them separately. Make sure to replace kitchen towels and hand towels every day. Since they’re often damp from frequent use, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria. According to the American Cleaning Institute, bath towels should be washed every 3 to 5 uses since they often remain damp for hours after each use and can harbor germs. Washcloths should be washed after each use. Bath mats and rugs should be washed once a week.

Wash bed sheets and pillow cases every two weeks

Bed sheets can collect dust, allergens, sweat, and bacteria so should be washed in hot water at least every two weeks. If you have a tendency to sweat in your sleep, consider washing your sheets more often. Wash each sheet set separately to minimize tangling and twisting during the washing and drying process. This also ensures the sheets have enough room to move around to get clean.

Do a color fast test

In addition to washing light and dark clothing separately, it’s important to test new items for color fastness. This term describes how well a fabric can maintain its color without fading or bleeding. To test how colorfast a piece of clothing is, wet a small area of the garment, then press a white cloth or paper towel into the fabric and check to see if any color comes off. Another option is to wet a white cloth or paper towel and rub the garment to see if any color bleeds. If color comes off, then hand wash the garment until the color bleeding stops. This also applies if you’re washing any of your children’s plush toys.

Put socks into a laundry mesh bag

Sick of losing socks? Keep them together by putting them into a laundry mesh bag prior to washing and drying. This keeps them together and reduces the chances of them getting lost in a shirt sleeve or inside a pair of pants.

Zip it up

Zip up all jackets and pants prior to washing. Unzipped articles can cause snags during the washing and drying process. Fastening all zippers can minimize damage.

Unbutton everything

This one shouldn’t be too difficult since most shirts are left unbuttoned after you take them off. For men’s dress shirts, be sure to also undo the collar buttons and sleeve buttons prior to washing. Buttoned up clothing may be damaged if a button gets snagged on something and tears the button hole during the washing or drying process.

Maximize the spin cycle

Getting your laundry as dry as possible before putting it into the dryer will help reduce energy costs by shortening the drying time. Another benefit is that less heat and tumbling will help protect the quality of your laundry. For example, the dryer may cause towels to unravel over time and cause stretchy clothing such as yoga pants and leggings to lose their shape and elasticity.

Give TLC to your washer and dryer

Don’t forget to show your washer and dryer some TLC every once in a while, as well as your laundry room.

Appliance Exterior

The exterior can collect dust and grime over time so every week or so, grab a disinfecting wipe and give it a thorough wipe down. Areas to wipe down include:

Control panel, including all the buttons

Control knobs

Lid and sides

Washer Interior

Get rid of detergent and water mineral build-up inside your washer by cleaning the inside of your washing machine twice a year.

Fill the washing machine with hot water to the highest level. Add two cups of distilled vinegar and run it through a complete wash cycle. Then repeat the process with only hot water (no vinegar).

When the cycles are finished, use a microfiber cloth to wipe out any remaining residue inside the drum.

Dryer Interior and Vents

Regular cleaning and maintenance of dryers is important for optimal efficiency and to prevent a fire hazard.

Empty the lint filter after every cycle.

Once a year, clean the lint screen by scrubbing with a sponge or toothbrush dipped in detergent. Rinse thoroughly with clear water then air dry before putting it back in the dryer.

Also once a year, clean the dryer exhaust vents to help prevent dryer fires. You’ll need to disconnect the hose from the back of the dryer to do this. Use the hose attachment of your vacuum to suck up the lint in the vent or snake a long brush through the vent to push out the lint. Another (easier) option is to hire a professional dryer vent cleaning service.

Wipe out the dryer drum as needed. Use a clean cloth dampened with soapy water to wipe out any pet hairs or other debris or build-up that may be in the drum.

Laundry Room

Your laundry room can get full of dust and lint if you don’t clean it regularly. Use surface wipes, like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes, to kill bacteria** and viruses* on countertops and cabinets. You can also use disinfecting wipes to clean plastic laundry baskets and hampers. Use your vacuum to pick up dust and debris on the floor; the hose attachment is helpful for getting dust behind and in between the appliances. Then follow up by mopping the floor. Your cleaning schedule depends on how often you do laundry, but in general, cleaning the laundry room every two weeks is recommended.

You can find Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes at Costco warehouses nationwide.

Diaper bags are a must-have item when it comes to parenthood. They’re essential for packing up all of your baby’s things in an easily accessible place when you venture out. Typical diaper bag items include diapers, baby wipes, pacifiers, change of clothing, etc.

Because they’re frequently used outside of the home, diaper bags can get pretty filthy, so it’s important to clean them regularly. If you haven’t been cleaning your diaper bag or aren’t sure how to do it, keep reading for some how-to tips.

How often should I clean the diaper bag?

Wiping down your diaper bag once a week is a good habit. Any spills or messes in between your weekly wipe-downs should be handled immediately so it doesn’t leave any stains.

Avoid throwing it into a washing machine unless the label clearly states it’s washing-machine safe. Doing so could cause damage to your diaper bag.

We recommend giving your diaper bag a deep cleaning at least once every six months.

How to clean diaper bags

Step 1: Check the label for manufacturer care instructions

The first thing you should do prior to cleaning is to check the label on the diaper bag to see if there are care instructions. The cleaning process can range from spot cleaning to tossing it into the washing machine depending on the material and style. Generally speaking, wiping down and spot cleaning should be safe to do on any type of material.

Step 2: Empty it completely

Take everything out of your diaper bag. Make sure to empty all pockets and compartments. Leave all zippers and clasps open.

Step 3: Shake it out

Turn it upside down over a large garbage can and shake it so any loose crumbs and dirt will fall out. You can do this outside if you prefer.

Step 4: Vacuum it

Use a slim vacuum attachment to remove any remaining dirt, dust, and debris inside the bag.

Step 5: Clean it with soapy water

Fill a bucket or large mixing bowl with warm water and mild laundry detergent. Wet a clean cloth, then wring it out so it’s damp. Then use the damp cloth to wipe the diaper bag thoroughly inside and outside. Make sure to wipe inside the pockets and compartments, as well as all straps and handles.

Step 6: Clean it with clear water

Repeat the process with a clean cloth that is wet with only water (no detergent).

Step 7: Let it air dry

Hang the diaper bag somewhere to air dry completely before using it again. Leave the pockets and compartments open so it dries faster.

If you’re out and about when your diaper bag experiences a spill or a mess, you can use baby wipes in a pinch. They’re versatile and can be used for more than just diaper changes!

Regularly cleaning your diaper bag will help it last longer in case you want to sell it to another mom after your little one outgrows the need for one.

Are you one of the millions who got a Peloton during the pandemic? With the closure of gyms and fitness studios in 2020, many people turned to exercising at home, and a popular workout option is the Peloton stationary exercise bike. As with all exercise equipment — whether or not it’s shared — it requires regular cleaning to stay in top working condition. Plus, if you’re working up a daily sweat on your Peloton, it’s a good idea from a health perspective to wipe it down regularly. Here are some cleaning tips so you know how to clean your Peloton.

It’s more than a bike. It’s an investment.

The stereotypical story of the stationary exercise bike goes something like this: you make a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, you invest hundreds or thousands of dollars into the latest and greatest version, then it ends up being the world’s most expensive clothes hanger. It stands in the corner of the room — dusty, forlorn, a guilty reminder of missed goals and misspent cash.

And then the Peloton arrived, and it was a game-changer. Maybe it was the interactivity — the feeling that you’re in a class with like-minded people, encouraging each other and sweating it out together (virtually). Maybe it was the fact that it felt that way, but if you wanted to, you could climb off your bike and reach for that open bag of chips nearby without judgment. Or maybe it was the holiday commercial that went viral.

One thing is for sure: People who love their Peloton, love their Peloton. They use them every day, sometimes multiple times a day. There are families with multiple users as well. That’s a lot of sweat on a significant investment.

Keeping the machine clean by wiping it down every day with a wet wipe like Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes will stop the spread of germs that could cause infection or illness.

Peloton Frame

For the metal frame of your Peloton, we recommend using Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes. These pre-moistened wipes use a proprietary solution to clean, deodorize, sanitize, and disinfect while being safe on hard, nonporous surfaces. Because they’re 64% larger than the leading household wipe, and made from renewable, plant-based fibers, you’ll be able to efficiently clean the frame without worrying about scratching the metal. Best of all, they’re proven to kill viruses* and bacteria** 25% faster than other leading brands (3 minutes vs. 4 minutes).

The Method: Working from the top of the bike frame down, gently wipe each section, making sure it remains wet for at least 3 minutes, then allowing it to completely air dry. Pay special attention to the handlebars, seat, resistance knob, and anywhere else that may have gotten drenched in sweat.

Peloton Accessories

The bike mats, phone mounts, cleats, and other accessories available from Peloton should also be part of your après-workout wipedown, especially if you share the machine with others. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are perfect for cleaning Peloton accessories — each wipe is a great one-step cleaning and disinfecting tool that kills 99.9% of bacteria** and viruses*, including the COVID-19 virusɸ.

The Method: Most of the Peloton accessories have hard, non-porous surfaces, so using a Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipe to carefully clean the grooves, nooks, and crannies as well as the smooth surfaces is easy. Our lemon-scented disinfecting wipes have scrubbing applicators to help you tackle a variety of cleaning challenges!

Peloton Screen

The Peloton screen can also be cleaned with Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes. As a hard, nonporous surface, our wipes are safe to use on the screen and are great for cleaning and disinfecting an area that is frequently touched. If there’s any streaking, you can follow up with a dry microfiber cloth.

The Method: Be sure to always shut down the screen prior to cleaning by holding down the red button on top of the tablet. Gently wipe the screen in one direction, as well as the outside frame. Be sure to run the wipe along the inside edge of the screen as well, as sweat can accumulate in the corners after a particularly intense workout. It’s best to wipe the touchscreen off with a Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipe after every ride.

HOT TIP: Out of Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes? No problem — Nice ’N CLEAN® Baby Wipes are free of parabens, phthalates, plastic, alcohol, dyes, and chlorine, making them gentle enough to protect the surface of your Peloton bike frame, yet strong enough to clean off your sweat.

Protect your investment

Keeping your Peloton clean and sweat-free will help keep it running smoothly for many years and it just takes a few minutes after each ride to protect your investment. Wet wipes make it convenient and easy to clean your Peloton. Keep a package of disinfecting wipes next to your bike for easy access after you wrap up a workout.

Sneezing, sniffling, watery and itchy eyes… these are symptoms that sound like you have a cold, but they can also be due to allergens in the air. They can be found inside your home or outside.

Seasonal allergies are very common, affecting millions of people in the U.S.

In this article, we’ll go over what allergens are, how they impact your health, and ways to minimize allergens in your environment.

What are common allergy symptoms?

Allergy symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, and can sometimes be confused for the common cold. Here are some common symptoms:

Nasal congestion

Stuffy or runny nose

Sneezing

Watery and itchy eyes

Post-nasal drip

Coughing

Itchy skin

Rash

Allergic reactions may lead to more serious conditions involving breathing (asthma), eyes (conjunctivitis), and skin (eczema, dermatitis).

What causes allergy symptoms?

Allergens are tiny particles that are found all around us - typically invisible to the naked eye. They can trigger allergic reactions if your body perceives them as an intruder and reacts against them. One of the most common forms is called allergic rhinitis, also known as “hay fever.”

Environmental allergens include dust, mold, pollen, and pet dander, among others. Some are seasonal, while others are year-round. Some are found inside the home, while others are outside.

Indoor Allergens

Allergens found inside tend to be year-round allergens. These are common indoor allergens that may be lurking inside your home.

House dust

Dust is everywhere and on everything - sometimes you can see it, sometimes you can’t. It’s a mixture of various tiny particles from natural substances that can cause allergic reactions. Some examples include dried food particles, fabric fibers, insect parts, animal dander, and mold spores.

Solution: Dust frequently if you’re prone to allergic reactions at home. Using a dry duster can make things worse by causing dust to fly around so we recommend using a wet wipe when dusting furniture. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are great for cleaning off dust from nonporous hard surfaces.

Dust mites

These microscopic pests live in mattresses and bedding, carpet, curtains, and upholstered furniture like couches. They love warm, humid environments and survive off of human secretions and shedded skin cells. Many people have allergic reactions to their droppings, which can become airborne. Typical cleaning methods such as vacuuming and dusting don’t get rid of them completely.

Solution: Wash your sheets frequently in hot water. Vacuum and steam clean your mattress regularly.

Mold

This fungus triggers allergy symptoms when mold spores get into the air. Mold thrives in dark, damp areas, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics. Indoor plants, such as those in damp wicker baskets, may also contribute to mold growth. Mold spores usually increase at night, especially during the rainy season when it’s more damp and humid.

Solution: For small and mild cases of mold, you can use household cleaning products containing bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or distilled white vinegar to clean and prevent mold growth. For extensive mold growth, it is recommended that you seek a mold professional who can remove it safely and completely.

Pets

If you find yourself sneezing and wheezing around cats and dogs, it’s likely you’re allergic to a protein found in their dander, urine, or saliva, not their fur. Dander refers to the skin shedding of animals. Cat allergies are more common -- about twice as common as dog allergies.

Solution: The best solution is to avoid the animal. If you visit a place with a dog or cat, take a shower and throw your clothes into the washing machine as soon as you get home so the allergens don’t spread in your house. If you own a pet, brush the pet’s fur daily outside of the home and clean the litter box or cage. Give your pet weekly baths to minimize dander. Other solutions include taking allergy medication (OTC or prescription) or getting allergy shots which can help control and minimize the symptoms.

Outdoor Allergens

Pollen

This seasonal offender is produced by trees, grasses, and weeds and causes millions of people to feel miserable in the spring.

Solution: Staying indoors helps but most people control their seasonal allergies by taking an Over-The-Counter allergy medication such as Claritin or Allegra.

Mold

Mold spores are also an outdoor allergen. They’re typically found in soil, plants, and rotting wood. Mold spores float in the air similar to pollen. Also like pollen, they increase in the spring when temperatures start to rise. If you live in the South or on the West Coast of the United States, mold can be a problem year-round.

Solution: Similar to pollen, avoiding and minimizing exposure is the best way to control allergy symptoms due to mold. You can also take OTC medication. Read some more tips below.

Cleaning tips to minimize allergens at home

Wash your sheets frequently in hot water. Dry them on the highest temperature setting.

Vacuum and steam clean your mattress every 6-8 weeks to get rid of dust mites

Vacuum more than just your carpet; also vacuum your couch, sofa cushions, throw pillows, curtains, and any other upholstered surface in your home. Anything that can absorb a spill can also absorb hair and dust.

Shampoo your carpet annually. Rent a steam cleaner or hire a professional crew. A vacuum can only do so much to remove dirt and dust.

Use surface wipes to remove dust and other allergens throughout your house. Depending on the surface, this can be done daily to weekly. Most of us wipe down countertops daily, but there are many other surfaces that collect dust. Use surface wipes to get rid of dust on top of your refrigerator and on cabinets, washer and dryer, and bookshelves.

Use HEPA air purifiers throughout your home. They can help reduce the amount of dust particles in the air.

If you have dogs or cats, brush their fur daily and bathe them at least once a week to reduce dander. It’s also important to vacuum your carpet and furniture, and clean the litter box and cage frequently.

Tips for managing allergy symptoms

Keep your windows closed and keep air conditioning on to clean, cool down, and dry out the air in your home. Warm and humid environments help mold and dust mites thrive.

Stay indoors when pollen and mold counts are high outside. If you go outside, shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes when you return so you don’t spread allergens in your home.

Don’t hang any clothes, sheets, or towels outside to dry. They’ll collect allergens and bring them into your home.

Keep your windows closed when traveling by car.

Try OTC allergy medications to control your symptoms or see an allergist to determine whether you need a prescription.

While living with allergies is certainly unpleasant -- sometimes even miserable -- there are things you can do and medication you can take to help prevent or reduce your symptoms. Having wet wipes on hand can help reduce the amount of allergens inside your home. Nice ’N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes are perfect for removing dust and dirt on hard surfaces, antibacterial hand wipes are great for your hands, and even baby wipes can come in handy for dust removal.
