According to a recent U.S. poll of a thousand people who returned to working in their offices this past year, 71% of the respondents said that they favored a hybrid work model that split their time between the office and working remotely. Many of us are working from home and plan to continue for the foreseeable future, at least part time. 3-Step Deep Clean Every Week

3. Leave the doors and windows open.

We’re all trying to find ways to improve our well-being, both emotionally and physically — and staying active is an important component of both. Home gyms are a great way to stay healthy while gyms are closed. But whether you’re working out at home or at the gym, make sure you are working out in a safe and clean environment. It’s important to clean and disinfect your exercise equipment regularly.

How to clean weights and weight lifting equipment

If you’re using hand weights — or an entire weightlifting set — in your home gym, keeping this equipment clean entails regular maintenance. Whether they’re metal or covered with rubber, the sweat and oils from the skin, and the gripping, rubbing, and handling that comes from regular use, can make them susceptible to wear and tear, as well as a potential breeding ground for microbes and bacteria.

According to EquipmentGuys.com, a sports facilities installation company that specializes in high school and college gym installations, cleaning these items by mixing a few drops of dish soap with one gallon of water is best. First, moisten a clean cloth with the sudsy water and wipe the weight clean, then dry it well with a cloth to prevent rusting. “We suggest using a stiff plastic bristle brush with the soap/water mix to scrub the handles as well,” says Equipment Guys founder and CEO Matt Purdy. “Then, let it sit for a minute before wiping it clean with a dry cloth.”

How to clean yoga mats

When it comes to yoga mats, we’ll first tell you what not to do — do NOT put it in the washing machine unless it comes with clear instructions that say it’s safe to do so. Many yoga mats contain vinyl, plastic, and other substances that can easily scratch and stress your washer’s inner machinery. The mat could also melt if it gets too hot.

Instead, always wash your yoga mat at home by hand — and do it at least once every two yoga sessions. This will go a long way to ensuring you don’t find yourself battling a case of ringworm, athlete’s foot, or a staph or yeast infection from the bacteria that thrive in the dark, warm, moist environment of a yoga mat.

Here again, dishwashing soap — a few drops in a spray bottle filled with warm water — will help clean your mat, thanks to the chlorine and other common chemicals found in it. Use only a few drops, however, as too much dish soap can leave your mat slippery. Spray the mat liberally, then scrub it gently with a microfiber cloth to keep the stickiness of the mat intact. Be sure to clean both sides of the mat, then rinse it with clean (soap-free) warm water and allow it to air dry. Don’t wring it out, and don’t hang it outside in the sun because it could damage the rubber. Instead, allow it to hang over your shower curtain rod overnight or dry the surface with a towel, then sandwich it between two dry, clean towels for an hour or two to absorb all the excess moisture.

It’s not enough to only clean your yoga mat, though — you also need to disinfect it to make sure you kill all the germs lurking on it. This is especially important if you share your mat with a family member, or use a communal mat at a yoga center. How to clean stationary exercise equipment

Treadmills

If you’re using a treadmill as part of your home gym, you should clean it at least once a week, particularly if there are multiple users. According to LiveStrong.com, keeping your treadmill’s belt in good working order is as easy as these 4 steps:

• First, unplug the treadmill before cleaning.

• Next, dust the treadmill belt with a surface duster. This will remove buildup on, around, and underneath it.

• Then, using a cloth slightly moistened with clean water, gently wipe down the belt, rotating it to clean all of it. Avoid using any kind of cleaning product on the belt unless recommended by the manufacturer.

• Finally, using a dry paper towel, rotate the treadmill belt again to dry it thoroughly.

Don’t forget to wipe down the dashboard and any other outer surface you may have touched or sweated on. This can be done with a damp paper towel most of the time. However, once or twice a month, using a wipe like Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes on the plastic and metal surfaces will help sanitize and disinfect them. Also use the surface wipe to gently clean the glass areas on the dashboard. If you see any streaking, follow up with a microfiber cloth.

Stationary bikes

Elliptical machines

According to Home Gym Resource, when it comes to an elliptical trainer, a mild dishwashing detergent and clean water are best for removing sweat, dust, grime, and dirt. Avoid bleach and ammonia-based cleaners since they can harm the plastic components found on many elliptical machines.

• After each workout, dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe down the machine, being careful not to let water drip into it. Concentrate on the handles and the console, as well as anywhere sweat may have accumulated.

• Once a month, unplug the elliptical machine for a deep cleaning. Use a few drops of dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water to clean the machine more thoroughly. Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with the solution, taking care not to make it too wet or sudsy, and carefully wipe down the entire exterior of the machine, including the rollers and guide rails. Then, with a clean, dry cloth, dry off the machine thoroughly. Follow up by wiping the machine down with a wet wipe such as Nice 'N CLEAN® Disinfecting Wipes on the plastic and metal surfaces. Allow it to air dry before using again.

• Every six months, unplug the machine and remove the plastic covers. Vacuum any visible debris without banging into any of the parts inside, and replace the covers. 

Rowing machines

Similar to a stationary bike, wipe down the exterior of your rowing machine to remove sweat and grime after each workout. The pros at Home Gym Resource suggest wiping the machine down with a clean microfiber cloth dampened in a solution of dishwashing soap and warm water. Dry the machine completely with a clean, dry cloth afterward. Laundry is something everyone has to deal with. And it gets harder when you have children. Believe it or not, there are right and wrong ways to do laundry. So we’ve rounded up our best tips, tricks, and hacks for perfect laundry.

 
Wash frequently

Don’t let your laundry pile up and do multiple loads in one day. Try your best to do laundry at least every other day so your hamper doesn’t become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. This is especially true if any of your laundry is wet or damp. Another reason not to wait -- stains are harder to get out the longer they sit. 

 
Wash heavily soiled items separately and immediately

Anything with bodily fluids — urine, poop, vomit, blood, sweat — on it should be washed immediately in hot water. Any mud or food stains should also be washed right away. It’s best to do a separate load so the germs don’t spread to other pieces of laundry.  

 
Wash face masks after each use

It’s best to have multiple machine-washable masks available so you don’t have to wear the same one multiple times a day. At a minimum, they should be washed after one day of use. Check to see if it’s dryer-safe. The heat can help kill any lingering germs. Air drying masks in a sunny area can also help kill germs.

 
Wash towels, mats, and rugs separately

Bath towels, kitchen towels, hand towels, and washcloths are likely to carry more germs than your clothes. It’s best to have a separate hamper for them and to wash them separately. Make sure to replace kitchen towels and hand towels every day. Since they’re often damp from frequent use, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria. According to the American Cleaning Institute, bath towels should be washed every 3 to 5 uses since they often remain damp for hours after each use and can harbor germs. Washcloths should be washed after each use. Bath mats and rugs should be washed once a week.

 
Wash bed sheets and pillow cases every two weeks

Bed sheets can collect dust, allergens, sweat, and bacteria so should be washed in hot water at least every two weeks. If you have a tendency to sweat in your sleep, consider washing your sheets more often. Wash each sheet set separately to minimize tangling and twisting during the washing and drying process. This also ensures the sheets have enough room to move around to get clean. 

 
Do a color fast test 

In addition to washing light and dark clothing separately, it’s important to test new items for color fastness. This term describes how well a fabric can maintain its color without fading or bleeding. To test how colorfast a piece of clothing is, wet a small area of the garment, then press a white cloth or paper towel into the fabric and check to see if any color comes off. Another option is to wet a white cloth or paper towel and rub the garment to see if any color bleeds. If color comes off, then hand wash the garment until the color bleeding stops. This also applies if you’re washing any of your children’s plush toys.

 
Put socks into a laundry mesh bag

Sick of losing socks? Keep them together by putting them into a laundry mesh bag prior to washing and drying. This keeps them together and reduces the chances of them getting lost in a shirt sleeve or inside a pair of pants.

 
Zip it up

Zip up all jackets and pants prior to washing. Unzipped articles can cause snags during the washing and drying process. Fastening all zippers can minimize damage.

 
Unbutton everything

This one shouldn’t be too difficult since most shirts are left unbuttoned after you take them off. For men’s dress shirts, be sure to also undo the collar buttons and sleeve buttons prior to washing. Buttoned up clothing may be damaged if a button gets snagged on something and tears the button hole during the washing or drying process.

 
Maximize the spin cycle

Getting your laundry as dry as possible before putting it into the dryer will help reduce energy costs by shortening the drying time. Another benefit is that less heat and tumbling will help protect the quality of your laundry. For example, the dryer may cause towels to unravel over time and cause stretchy clothing such as yoga pants and leggings to lose their shape and elasticity. 

 
Give TLC to your washer and dryer

Don’t forget to show your washer and dryer some TLC every once in a while, as well as your laundry room.

Appliance Exterior

The exterior can collect dust and grime over time so every week or so, grab a disinfecting wipe and give it a thorough wipe down. Areas to wipe down include:

• Control panel, including all the buttons

• Control knobs

• Lid and sides

Washer Interior

Get rid of detergent and water mineral build-up inside your washer by cleaning the inside of your washing machine twice a year.

• Fill the washing machine with hot water to the highest level. Add two cups of distilled vinegar and run it through a complete wash cycle. Then repeat the process with only hot water (no vinegar). 

• When the cycles are finished, use a microfiber cloth to wipe out any remaining residue inside the drum.

Dryer Interior and Vents

Regular cleaning and maintenance of dryers is important for optimal efficiency and to prevent a fire hazard.

• Empty the lint filter after every cycle.

• Once a year, clean the lint screen by scrubbing with a sponge or toothbrush dipped in detergent. Rinse thoroughly with clear water then air dry before putting it back in the dryer.

• Also once a year, clean the dryer exhaust vents to help prevent dryer fires. You’ll need to disconnect the hose from the back of the dryer to do this. Use the hose attachment of your vacuum to suck up the lint in the vent or snake a long brush through the vent to push out the lint. Another (easier) option is to hire a professional dryer vent cleaning service.

• Wipe out the dryer drum as needed. Use a clean cloth dampened with soapy water to wipe out any pet hairs or other debris or build-up that may be in the drum.

Laundry Room 

Your laundry room can get full of dust and lint if you don’t clean it regularly. You can also use disinfecting wipes to clean plastic laundry baskets and hampers. Diaper bags are a must-have item when it comes to parenthood. They’re essential for packing up all of your baby’s things in an easily accessible place when you venture out. Typical diaper bag items include diapers, baby wipes, pacifiers, change of clothing, etc.

How often should I clean the diaper bag?

Wiping down your diaper bag once a week is a good habit. Any spills or messes in between your weekly wipe-downs should be handled immediately so it doesn’t leave any stains. 

Avoid throwing it into a washing machine unless the label clearly states it’s washing-machine safe. Doing so could cause damage to your diaper bag.

We recommend giving your diaper bag a deep cleaning at least once every six months.

How to clean diaper bags

Step 1: Check the label for manufacturer care instructions

The first thing you should do prior to cleaning is to check the label on the diaper bag to see if there are care instructions. The cleaning process can range from spot cleaning to tossing it into the washing machine depending on the material and style. Generally speaking, wiping down and spot cleaning should be safe to do on any type of material. 

Step 2: Empty it completely

Take everything out of your diaper bag. Make sure to empty all pockets and compartments. Leave all zippers and clasps open.

Step 3: Shake it out

Turn it upside down over a large garbage can and shake it so any loose crumbs and dirt will fall out. You can do this outside if you prefer.

Step 4: Vacuum it

Use a slim vacuum attachment to remove any remaining dirt, dust, and debris inside the bag.

Step 5: Clean it with soapy water

Fill a bucket or large mixing bowl with warm water and mild laundry detergent. Wet a clean cloth, then wring it out so it’s damp. Then use the damp cloth to wipe the diaper bag thoroughly inside and outside. Make sure to wipe inside the pockets and compartments, as well as all straps and handles.

Step 6: Clean it with clear water

Repeat the process with a clean cloth that is wet with only water (no detergent).

Step 7: Let it air dry

Hang the diaper bag somewhere to air dry completely before using it again. Leave the pockets and compartments open so it dries faster.

Sneezing, sniffling, watery and itchy eyes… these are symptoms that sound like you have a cold, but they can also be due to allergens in the air. They can be found inside your home or outside.

Seasonal allergies are very common, affecting millions of people in the U.S. 

In this article, we’ll go over what allergens are, how they impact your health, and ways to minimize allergens in your environment.

What are common allergy symptoms?

Allergy symptoms are similar to cold symptoms, and can sometimes be confused for the common cold. Here are some common symptoms:

• Coughing

• Itchy skin

Allergic reactions may lead to more serious conditions involving breathing (asthma), eyes (conjunctivitis), and skin (eczema, dermatitis).

What causes allergy symptoms?

Allergens are tiny particles that are found all around us - typically invisible to the naked eye. They can trigger allergic reactions if your body perceives them as an intruder and reacts against them. One of the most common forms is called allergic rhinitis, also known as “hay fever.”

Environmental allergens include dust, mold, pollen, and pet dander, among others. Some are seasonal, while others are year-round. Some are found inside the home, while others are outside.

Indoor Allergens

Allergens found inside tend to be year-round allergens. These are common indoor allergens that may be lurking inside your home. 

House dust

Dust is everywhere and on everything - sometimes you can see it, sometimes you can’t. It’s a mixture of various tiny particles from natural substances that can cause allergic reactions. Some examples include dried food particles, fabric fibers, insect parts, animal dander, and mold spores.

Mold

This fungus triggers allergy symptoms when mold spores get into the air. Mold thrives in dark, damp areas, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics. Indoor plants, such as those in damp wicker baskets, may also contribute to mold growth. Mold spores usually increase at night, especially during the rainy season when it’s more damp and humid.

Solution: For small and mild cases of mold, you can use household cleaning products containing bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or distilled white vinegar to clean and prevent mold growth. For extensive mold growth, it is recommended that you seek a mold professional who can remove it safely and completely.

Pets

If you find yourself sneezing and wheezing around cats and dogs, it’s likely you’re allergic to a protein found in their dander, urine, or saliva, not their fur. Dander refers to the skin shedding of animals. Cat allergies are more common -- about twice as common as dog allergies. 

Solution: The best solution is to avoid the animal. If you visit a place with a dog or cat, take a shower and throw your clothes into the washing machine as soon as you get home so the allergens don’t spread in your house. If you own a pet, brush the pet’s fur daily outside of the home and clean the litter box or cage. Give your pet weekly baths to minimize dander. Other solutions include taking allergy medication (OTC or prescription) or getting allergy shots which can help control and minimize the symptoms. 

Outdoor Allergens

Pollen

This seasonal offender is produced by trees, grasses, and weeds and causes millions of people to feel miserable in the spring. 

Solution: Staying indoors helps but most people control their seasonal allergies by taking an Over-The-Counter allergy medication such as Claritin or Allegra.

Mold

Mold spores are also an outdoor allergen. They’re typically found in soil, plants, and rotting wood. Mold spores float in the air similar to pollen. Also like pollen, they increase in the spring when temperatures start to rise. If you live in the South or on the West Coast of the United States, mold can be a problem year-round.

Cleaning tips to minimize allergens at home

• Wash your sheets frequently in hot water. Dry them on the highest temperature setting.

• Vacuum and steam clean your mattress every 6-8 weeks to get rid of dust mites

• Vacuum more than just your carpet; also vacuum your couch, sofa cushions, throw pillows, curtains, and any other upholstered surface in your home. Anything that can absorb a spill can also absorb hair and dust.

• Shampoo your carpet annually. Rent a steam cleaner or hire a professional crew. A vacuum can only do so much to remove dirt and dust.

• Use surface wipes to remove dust and other allergens throughout your house. Depending on the surface, this can be done daily to weekly. Most of us wipe down countertops daily, but there are many other surfaces that collect dust. Use surface wipes to get rid of dust on top of your refrigerator and on cabinets, washer and dryer, and bookshelves.

• Use HEPA air purifiers throughout your home. They can help reduce the amount of dust particles in the air.

• If you have dogs or cats, brush their fur daily and bathe them at least once a week to reduce dander. It’s also important to vacuum your carpet and furniture, and clean the litter box and cage frequently. 

Tips for managing allergy symptoms

• Keep your windows closed and keep air conditioning on to clean, cool down, and dry out the air in your home. Warm and humid environments help mold and dust mites thrive.

• Stay indoors when pollen and mold counts are high outside. If you go outside, shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes when you return so you don’t spread allergens in your home.

• Don’t hang any clothes, sheets, or towels outside to dry. They’ll collect allergens and bring them into your home.

• Keep your windows closed when traveling by car.

• Try OTC allergy medications to control your symptoms or see an allergist to determine whether you need a prescription.

While living with allergies is certainly unpleasant -- sometimes even miserable -- there are things you can do and medication you can take to help prevent or reduce your symptoms.
